Control is a key area for personal , team or organizational development. If a person with a high degree of control , he or she will be able to lead with authenticity , consistency and flexibility and primarily focused on their desired outcome. When a team exercise on control, they tend to create the environment where the optimal outcome can be achieved through high level of trust , consciousness and adaptability. On the other side organization have a strong leadership core will retain a clear sense of identity, establishing conditions and measures for success and remain focused on their reaching their destination.
The ability to control and the channeling of emotions are key component of successful leadership for individuals , teams and organization. Coaching helps the direction and focus of all emotions to be targeted , applied and executed for the achievement of the desired goals. Individuals with greater control of their emotions are able to make intelligent decisions that are then supported and driven by power of the emotions , whereas those with less control allow their emotions to determine their thoughts ad reactions. Teams with stronger emotional control entertain objectivity and keep a balance perspective. Resilience, focus and calmness that come from being in control of emotions shine through at an organizational level of consistency and level of consideration involved in the decisions and strategies implemented.
Emotional leadership is an ingredient of being a successful coach so that continually select and introduce the right emotions at the right level , at the right time for everyone in order to achieve the desired outcome . We must admit that each coach has emotions , fears and sensitivities and these need to be controlled and channeled in order to coach at the optimal level. In order to enhance emotional leadership , we would need to manage emotions.
In order to manage emotions we can use the five steps principles. By mapping tis 5 steps principles individuals , teams and organization can observe what they are experiencing as part of the process rather than feeling emotional. This approach then provides the opportunity to make intelligent decision making. The 5 steps are :
1. Awareness- permits the management of outcome
2. Naming- enable emotions to be viewed and considered objectively
3. Accepting- accepting and understanding what the emotion is
4. Do nothing-ability to manage emotions
5. Decision making- what is needed to get desired outcome.
We as coach do invest a lot in emotion in every coaching session and it helps individuals a lot to move forwards to the desired outcome. Emotion helps at times from deriving from the individuals the need for the emotions and whether it is positive or negative . Positive emotions can be channeled in such a way that helps the person to move on or move forward. Having the right emotions at the right place and time can be fruitful for any decision making .At times we do have individuals while being coached start crying. It’s a very good sign as we believe that the negative emotions are being brought out. On an organizational side , it is to have the whole team understanding the philosophy behind the team to deliver the desired outcome . While we do communicate with the participants either in groups or individually , we do at times see how the greatest blockage come from emotions carried for years on their back. While being in an organization old habits of management may be to be eradicated or having a change management culture process in coming to the right goal and objective.
Candidates do feel relieved after couple of coaching sessions whether be it for career , relationship or whatsoever getting on tract with the right emotions and drive and helping them achieving their goals. Its all having the pleasure and enjoyment in feeling part of the process and journey working hand in hand with the coach until the desired outcome is reached .
We always say that to coach or being coach is just a journey from one destination to another . Enjoying the process from the journey bring a total transformation of the individual and helping them to achieve greater results in whatever they forward in life .
