• Are your employees serving you?

Are your employees serving you or are you serving them?  Are they engaged and motivated or do they drain your energy and enthusiasm?  An employee’s role is to help establish your business.  They should then help it to grow and take it forward.

Yet many employees hold businesses back, derail your plans and exhaust your resources.  If this is happening in your business, it needs to stop in order for you to get back on track.

There are a number of things you can do to stop it.  Firstly, you need to acknowledge what is happening and see the negative effect it is having.  Secondly, you need to explore the reasons why it is happening.  Is the employee entirely at fault or are you contributing to the situation in some way?  Thirdly you need to tackle the situation head on, confront the problem.

Confronting the problem is best done intelligently, with compassion, and with a very clear goal.  It is not a matter of getting angry or shouting, or even of simply firing the employee.  If that is how you tackle the situation, chances are you will find yourself in the same situation with the next employee.

The goal should always be to solve the problem, not simply remove it.  That way you can put it behind you and concentrate on growing and expanding your business with the help and support of your employees.  Which is the way it should be.
