I was extremely concerned that we've gone too far down the road and we'd taken the wrong path that we shouldn't have gone down, with potential wasted development.

I was concerned that we wasted a lot of money and a lot of time developing software which wasn't legally binding.

Leigh helped fix our legal position, which is tremendous piece of mind for me.

It was becoming evident that some hardened business people would not meet their obligation to make payments due to us.

We did not want to find ourselves in a position where we did not do something which would be detrimental to our position. We were not paid on the set date.

The advice got us to a point where we knew the legal steps to take to make a claim, and some options if we still were not paid. We put pressure on them with an organised plan.

It turned out quite well for us.

Shopping around for a solicitor is a pain. When you pick a solicitor you have to take a risk somewhere.

Now, we spend far less time and money on legal problems in our business.

When I brief a lawyer they need to know what I’m dealing with. I can't give lawyers an education on technology. They got to know what we're talking about. I can’t train them on the job because these disputes move so quickly. I can’t do it when the technical problems are moving so fast.

If I tell them it’s a cloud hosting thing, it's a server or data centre thing, I need them to understand it. In my business they need to understand latency on a server, a datacentre, a circuit, VPS, router and what the differences are.

They need to understand that even if the failure is on a server, it's still a server in a data centre. They need to know that just because it’s got a buzz word “cloud” doesn't mean it's fail safe.

Leigh’s got the knowledge to support a business selling high capacity internet connectivity. He’s a subject matter expert.

I wanted to protect my business in a series of contracts with internationally renowned London museums and venues.

Basically they were trying to palm off all the risk on to us as a supplier.

Whatever liability people are chasing in contracts, I want to know whether it is proportionate to the size of the contract, the size of the problem and that my business can deal with it.

We had Leigh look over the contracts. He put perspective on where we were at and what we should do before we agreed terms. We deflected that risk and got concessions on liability, indemnities and warranties that we would probably otherwise have lived with.

Once I knew what I would be signing up to, there was no way I was going to expose my business to the sort of risk they were asking us to sign up to. The tips for negotiating were well received.

Almost always, we’ll use a supplier that we know.

In our case we did not know any technology or software solicitors and no-one we knew could refer us to one.

We needed someone to cast an eye over some dull and lengthy legal documents, and look at our responses in negotiations to make sure we were not missing anything that could come back and bite us later on.

It’s not my main skillset.

We went on the internet and did some research and looked for people that knew about IT law. We Leigh found and have used him a few times. We've got somebody who's work we trust. He’s comprehensive and affordable – a rare mix.
